Welding Robot Remote Support and Training for Overseas Plants: What Should Be Included?

For a plant that buys a welding robot from overseas, commissioning ends when the supplier’s engineer flies home, but learning does not. What happens next decides whether operators run the cell independently or wait for help. Based on JTCLASER’s overseas commissioning projects, this article lists what training and remote support should include, and what buyers should ask for in the contract.

What should welding robot remote support for an overseas plant include?

On-site training that ends with operators running real parts, operating instructions in the operators' language, a fault-handling module, and remote sessions booked ahead across time zones and holidays. Remote access reaches the PC software only, so someone on site must be trained to change weld files and handle alarms.

1What should on-site training cover?

Training on a 9-axis cantilever workstation typically runs for several weeks on site. It should be checked against a written list, and each item should be marked done only when operators can do it on real parts:

ModuleOperators should be able to
SafetyUse emergency stops, keep clear of the working range, raise the lift safely
Daily operationStart up, shut down, run daily checks, place parts inside the range
Scanning and pathsChoose templates, scan, read the path preview
ParametersChange weld files, weaving and offsets, and make changes take effect
Fault handlingRecognise the main alarms, recover, and report the right information
MaintenanceTorch cleaning, consumables and basic checks

A general curriculum for building robotic welding skills is in the robotic welding training program.

2What lessons come from overseas commissioning?

Feedback from overseas plants points to five areas that decide whether operators become independent:

  1. Fault diagnosis and recovery

Operators need to handle the common alarms themselves, not just know they exist.

  2. Depth on parameters

Functions and parameters used every day should be practised, not just shown.

  3. Operator language

Instructions in the operators’ own language, for example Spanish, remove most misunderstandings.

  4. Trainer–operator communication

Plan an interpreter or bilingual material when trainer and operators share no language.

  5. A clear course outline

A written plan, module by module, makes it obvious what is done and what is left.

Plan a follow-up session after the first weeks of production. By then operators know which questions matter, and the training is far more effective.

3How should welding robot remote support be run?

  1. Book sessions in advance

Allow for the time difference (about six hours between China and Western Europe) and for public holidays on both sides.

  2. Check the connection first

If site Wi-Fi is weak, connect the PC to a phone hotspot; it is often more stable.

  3. Know what remote access can change

Remote access reaches the PC software: templates, scanning, procedure packages and paths. Weld files and alarms on the teach pendant must be handled by someone on site.

  4. Send the right information in the first message

Alarm photo, program line, robot pose, parameter pages and what was changed. The full list is in the alarm troubleshooting guide.

4What should buyers put in the contract?

  1. Training list with sign-off per module

So acceptance means the skill exists, not just that training took place.

  2. Language of manuals and instructions

Name the language of the documents and of the on-site trainer.

  3. Remote support channel and hours

How to book a session and who answers across time zones.

  4. Follow-up training

A date for a second session after production starts.

Support terms are covered further in welding automation support agreements. To request help on an installed cell, use the service request form.

Frequently asked questions

Can remote support change teach pendant parameters?

No. Remote access reaches the PC software only. Weld files and alarms on the teach pendant must be handled by someone on site.

Why does a remote support connection keep dropping?

Usually the site Wi-Fi is too weak. Connect the PC to a phone hotspot and reconnect.

How long should welding robot training take?

It depends on the parts and the team. Judge training by whether operators can run each module on real parts, not by the number of days.
