Intelligent Collaborative Robot Grinding Station

Teach the path by hand.
Let the robot handle repetitive grinding.

Turn operator-guided motion into a reusable finishing cycle. Configure the robot, abrasive tool and workholding around your parts for grinding, deburring and surface preparation.

Application-specific tooling and configuration. Final scope is agreed for your workpiece.

Bring your operator's know-how into the robot cycle

Keep people focused on setup and quality while the robot repeats a validated motion.

01

Teach by hand

Guide the arm through the intended path. Hand-guided teaching makes motion setup more direct and easier to relate to the real part.

02

Reuse validated paths

Record and replay a taught trajectory for matching workpieces with consistent fixturing. Refine the program when the part or process changes.

03

Reduce repetitive manual work

Transfer repeated tool movement to the robot, with operators managing teaching, loading, abrasive condition and inspection.

04

Configure for your parts

Select the abrasive head, consumables and fixture for the material, accessible surfaces and finish you need.

Application examples show different equipment and tooling. The demonstration is not a specification of a single standard package.

From a taught path to a repeatable process

1

Prepare

Locate the workpiece, select the tool and abrasive, and set the robot's tool and load data.

2

Guide and record

Use hand guidance to record the motion. Capture the required positions and review the tool orientation.

3

Test and refine

Check approach moves and the trajectory, then validate grinding settings on representative parts.

4

Repeat and inspect

Reuse the approved cycle. Monitor finish quality, positioning and abrasive wear during production.

Hand guidance simplifies teaching; abrasive selection, process settings and validation are still required.

Explore the right finishing application

Start with the surface you need to improve, then choose the tooling and robot arrangement.

Robot-mounted abrasive disc working on a metal surface

Surface preparation and blending

Evaluate disc or other abrasive tooling for accessible surfaces and weld-bead blending. Define the material removal allowance and target finish before selecting the process.

Edges and component features

Assess accessible burrs, edges and local finishing areas on metal components. Part access, clamping and tool clearance determine which features can be processed.

A workstation configured around your job

Robot & reach

Choose the working envelope and payload for the complete tool assembly and process loads.

Grinding head & abrasive

Match tool type, speed range and consumables to the material and removal requirement.

Fixture & part positioning

Keep the workpiece consistently located so validated paths remain relevant to each cycle.

Compliance / force control

Evaluate a dedicated package when controlled contact force or surface variation requires it. Confirm this option in the quotation.

Controls & integration

Define tool signals and peripheral communication for the selected robot and controller.

Protection & extraction

Plan guarding and extraction for the abrasive process and workshop environment.

A collaborative robot arm does not by itself make grinding suitable for unprotected human access. The complete application needs appropriate protective measures.

Questions before choosing a grinding station

Can the robot really be taught by hand?

The supplied Elfin platform documentation describes FreeDrive teaching and trajectory recording and replay. The final robot, controller and software version are checked against your project requirements.

Can the same path be used for different parts?

A validated path can be reused for matching parts with consistent positioning. Changes to geometry, fixturing, tools or abrasive wear may require adjustment or a new program.

Does hand-guided teaching include constant-force grinding?

These are separate functions. If the job requires controlled contact force, a suitable compliance or force-control package must be selected and validated for that application.

What finish and production rate can I expect?

Results depend on material, starting condition, tool, abrasive and process settings. Share representative parts and measurable acceptance criteria so the proposed process can be assessed.
